Moreno’s Grade 3 Girls
In the 1930s Jacob Moreno began to use visual images to display what we now call social networks, and he became the father of social network visualization. These pictures show relationships between the girls in third class in a “reform school” in New York in the 1930s, as recorded by Moreno. One can see a group of the four closely interrelated girls in the centre, and a clique of three girls in the top right. We can observe that several of the other girls are relatively socially isolated.
Each of these pictures use a weighted Voronoi tessellation in the background, showing the social groups. The layout, which is the same in each picture, was computed using a topology-shape-metrics algorithm. The edges with bends are rendered as cubic Bezier curves with the bends specifying control points.
